When my daughter Grace turned 7 years old (her golden birthday), my mother and I took her to New York City for a weekend of shopping, shows, and fine dining. I suppose my first mistake in planning her special weekend was imagining my 7 year old self running through the streets of Manhattan! My 7 year old self lived for the chance to shop with my mother, and I assumed my daughter would feel the same.
We had a room at a fancy hotel, a magical dinner party at American Girl, tickets to the Gazillion Bubble Show, and a carefully mapped shopping excursion through the city. I set up a lunch in a giant freakin bird cage, for heaven’s sake!
But that’s just not Grace. She yawned, moaned, and drug her feet the entire time. And I had no one to blame but myself. The trip was my ideal birthday weekend, not hers. She would have loved designing a fairy garden in the woods behind our house, and eating a pasta and butter picnic with her grandma.
Almost eight years later, my sweet girl is still a creative nature lover who loves playing her violin and exploring the woods! However, she can now tolerate the occasional shopping trip with her dear ol’ mom.
Target is definitely her store of choice. And thank goodness because this kid grows like a weed! This month I wanted to give her a chance to put together three looks for my fashion post. Her picks are mostly from Target with a sprinkling of some staples from her other favorite store, my closet. I’d say she did a great job!

The story is great, does every mom do this – think of the perfect little girl birthday day and then find out the girl just wanted to hang out.
